Everything you wondered about trees & gardens.
Something missing? Ask us directly.
Do I need permission to fell or prune my tree?
Possibly. Trees in a Conservation Area or under a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) need consent from the Local Planning Authority. Conifer hedges over 2m may fall under the High Hedges Act. We check for you before we lift a saw — and we'll handle the paperwork if you prefer.
When is the best time of year for tree work?
Most pruning can be done safely between late autumn and early spring, when trees are dormant. Dead or dangerous wood is removed any time. We avoid nesting bird season for work that could disturb a nest — required by law (WCA 1981). For hedges we recommend one main late-winter cut plus a late-summer tidy.
Are you insured? What standards do you follow?
Yes — fully comprehensive Public Liability and Employee Liability insurance, evidence on request. All cuts and works follow British Standard 3998:1989 — Recommendations for Tree Work, which is the professional arboricultural benchmark.
How do I know my tree is diseased or unsafe?
Warning signs include fungal brackets, cavities, dead crown branches, bark that peels in sheets, and lean following heavy winds. Storms can loosen roots without obvious damage. If you're worried, we'll come look — tree inspections are free within our standard area.
Do you take the waste away?
Always, unless you want the logs or chip kept on site. We chip brash on the day, seasoned timber goes to our firewood operation, and we carry full waste transfer authorisation.
How much does tree work cost?
It depends on tree size, access, disposal and whether climbing or MEWP is needed. Small tidy-ups can be an hour's work; large dismantles take a full day with a team. Every job gets a written, itemised quote — no obligation, no surprise extras.
Free, honest, no-obligation quote — usually within 24 hours.
Tell us about the tree, the hedge, the garden. A few photos help. We'll come and have a proper look, then send you a clear written quote.
